We screen all of our patients at Sunshine Dentists for signs and symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea. If we suspect you may have an issue, we can offer a home sleep study to use in the comfort of your own bed. Or refer you to one of our network of local sleep physicians.
If appropriate, we can make you an oral sleep appliance or discuss other options to help open your airway at night as you sleep. This includes consideration of airway orthodontics, myofunctional therapy, palatal expansion, removal of tonsils, adenoids, and tongue ties.
How Can My Dentist Help Me Sleep Better?
You are not alone if you can't sleep with your CPAP machine
Many of our patients cannot successfully adapt to the use of a CPAP. They can be hard to tolerate and for patients with less severe symptoms, a sleep appliance can serve as an alternative.
Sleep appliances gently advance a patient’s lower jaw forward, bringing with it your tongue. This can create additional space in the back of the mouth and throat for air passage.
Many patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea use their appliance WITH their C-PAP; this is called Combination Therapy.
We don’t rest until you do
Each patient’s situation is unique and we want to find the right solution for you. If you need the care of a sleep physician we can help you find the best in Northern Virginia. For children with ADHD, this behavior problem might be masking untreated breathing issues. We also work with experts in the field of treating children to address the changing needs of kids as they grow. We’d love to evaluate your kids to be sure they can breath and sleep for normal brain development.
