When an adult patient in Burke tells me they want straighter teeth, the conversation almost always arrives at the same fork: clear aligners or traditional braces? Both work. Neither is universally better. The right answer depends on your teeth, your job, and how you actually live.
Here is how I talk this through with patients at Sunshine Dentists, without the marketing gloss.

What Is the Real Difference Between Invisalign and Braces?
Traditional braces use brackets bonded to your teeth connected by a wire, which is adjusted over time to pull teeth into position. They are fixed in place until treatment ends.
Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable trays. Each tray is slightly different from the last, and the sequence walks your teeth toward their planned position. You change trays on a schedule and remove them to eat and to clean your teeth.
The mechanical difference sounds small. The practical difference in daily life is substantial.
Which Works Faster?
For comparable cases, the two are closer than most people assume. Modern aligner treatment is not the slow option it was fifteen years ago.
What actually determines speed is how complicated the movement is, and in aligner cases, how consistently you wear them. Which leads to the single most important difference between the two.
The Honest Catch With Invisalign: You Have to Wear Them
Aligners need roughly 20 to 22 hours a day to work as planned. They come out to eat and to brush, and they go straight back in.
This is the part I want patients to think about seriously before choosing, because it is the difference between treatment finishing on schedule and treatment quietly stalling. Braces work whether or not you are disciplined, because you cannot take them off. Aligners require you to be the kind of person who puts them back in after lunch at a restaurant, every time.
Most adults manage this well. Some know themselves well enough to admit they would not, and for those patients I will genuinely recommend braces. That is not a failure of willpower, it is a sensible read on your own habits.
Which Is Better for Professional Adults?
This is usually the deciding factor for my patients in Northern Virginia, many of whom spend their working lives in meetings, in classrooms, or in front of clients.
Clear aligners are genuinely discreet. Most people will not notice them in ordinary conversation. They also come out, which means you can remove them for a presentation, a photograph, or a wedding.
Braces are visible, and no amount of tooth-colored ceramic entirely changes that. For some people that is completely fine. For others it is the reason they have postponed treatment for twenty years.
Which Is Easier to Live With?
Eating
With aligners, you take them out and eat normally. Nothing is off the menu. With braces, certain foods are genuinely off limits for the duration, and a popcorn kernel or a hard crust can mean an unscheduled visit to have a bracket rebonded.
Cleaning your teeth
This one matters more than patients expect. With aligners, you remove them and brush and floss exactly as you always have. With braces, you are cleaning around brackets and under wires, and it is genuinely harder.
I see the consequences of this in the chair. Patients who struggle to clean around fixed appliances can finish treatment with straight teeth and inflamed gums, or with white decalcification marks where plaque sat against the enamel. Straight teeth are not much of a prize if the enamel is marked.
Comfort
Both feel tight for a day or two after a change or adjustment, which is simply the sensation of teeth being moved. Braces have the additional problem of brackets and wires rubbing against the inside of your lips and cheeks, particularly early on.
Are There Cases Where Braces Are the Better Choice?
Yes, and I would rather say so than oversell aligners. Certain complex movements, significant bite corrections, and some surgical orthodontic cases are still handled more predictably with fixed appliances. Cases involving teeth that need substantial rotation or vertical movement can also favor braces.
And as I said above, if I think you are unlikely to wear aligners consistently, braces will serve you better. A treatment that finishes is better than an elegant one that does not.
What About Cost?
Our Invisalign fee at Sunshine Dentists ranges from $3,500 to $6,000 depending on complexity, and includes whitening gel and a custom set of retainers once treatment is complete. I have written a fuller explanation of what drives Invisalign cost and how patients pay for it.
The gap between aligners and braces is narrower than it once was. In most cases, cost is not the thing that should decide this for you.
How Do I Decide?
Rather than choosing from an article, let us look at your actual teeth. At a consultation we scan your teeth in 3D, photograph them, and examine your bite and gum health. From that I can tell you whether your case is suited to aligners, whether it would be better served by braces, and what each would realistically involve.
If you are also thinking about the broader appearance of your smile rather than alignment alone, our Digital Smile Design process lets us plan everything toward a single end result.
