“How long will this take?” is usually the second question my Burke patients ask about clear aligners, right after what it costs. It is a reasonable thing to want to know before committing, and it deserves a more useful answer than “it depends.”
It does depend. But it depends on a small number of specific things, and once you understand them you can form a realistic expectation for your own teeth.

What Determines How Long Invisalign Takes?
How far your teeth need to travel
Teeth move at a biologically limited rate. That rate cannot safely be rushed, because moving teeth too quickly risks damaging the root and the surrounding bone. So the distance your teeth need to cover is the single biggest factor. Minor crowding is a short case. Closing significant gaps or correcting a substantial bite discrepancy is not.
What kind of movement is required
Not all movement is equal. Tipping a tooth slightly is comparatively easy. Rotating a rounded tooth such as a premolar, moving a tooth bodily through bone, or changing a tooth’s vertical position are all more demanding and take longer.
How consistently you wear them
This is the factor entirely within your control, and the one that most often extends treatment. Aligners need roughly 20 to 22 hours a day.
The reason matters. Each tray is designed to apply gentle pressure for a set period. Leave them out too long and the teeth begin to settle back, so the next tray no longer fits as designed. At that point we are not merely pausing progress, we are repeating it. Patients who wear their aligners as prescribed generally finish close to the projected timeline. Patients who are casual about it tend to add months.
What Does the Treatment Schedule Actually Look Like?
- Consultation and records. 3D scan, clinical photographs, and an assessment of your gums, bite, and existing dental work.
- Planning. Your movement sequence is mapped out and your aligners are manufactured.
- Fitting. You receive your first trays and, in most cases, small tooth-colored attachments are bonded to certain teeth to give the aligners something to grip.
- Active treatment. You progress through trays on the schedule we set, with periodic check-in visits to confirm teeth are tracking as planned.
- Refinement. Many cases finish with a short additional series to perfect the final detail. This is normal and planned for, not a sign anything has gone wrong.
- Retention. Retainers, indefinitely.
Why Is There a Refinement Stage?
Because biology is not a simulation. The plan predicts how teeth should move, and teeth mostly cooperate, but individual teeth sometimes lag slightly or settle differently than projected.
Refinement is where we take a fresh scan and produce a short series of additional aligners to finish the detail properly. I would far rather add a few weeks and get the result right than declare a case finished while a tooth is still a fraction out of position.
Can Treatment Be Sped Up?
Not meaningfully, and I would be wary of promises to the contrary. Teeth move at the rate bone allows them to remodel. Forcing that process carries real risk, including root resorption, where the root shortens permanently.
What genuinely shortens treatment is wearing the aligners as instructed, changing trays on schedule, and attending your check-ins so any problem is caught early rather than three months later.
The Part That Lasts Longest: Retention
Here is the thing I most want patients to absorb before starting. Active treatment has an end date. Retention does not.
Teeth have a persistent tendency to drift back toward their previous positions, and that tendency does not expire after a year. It is why so many adults come to me with teeth that shifted decades after childhood braces, and it is almost always because retainer wear stopped at some point.
This is why our Invisalign fee includes a custom set of retainers, made as soon as your aligner treatment is finished. Wearing them as directed is what keeps your new smile in place. Keeping the result is genuinely part of the treatment, not an afterthought.
How Do I Find Out My Timeline?
A projected timeline for your teeth requires looking at your teeth. At a consultation we scan in 3D, take photographs, and assess your gums and bite. From that I can give you a realistic estimate of duration alongside your exact fee, in writing, before you commit to anything.
