Nobody wants to be the first person to find out whether they like their new smile after it has been permanently bonded to their teeth.
The Smile Test Drive exists so that you are not. It is the step in our Digital Smile Design process where a proposed smile stops being a picture on a screen and becomes something you can see in your own face, in a mirror, before any irreversible treatment happens.

What Is a Smile Test Drive?
After we design your proposed smile, we can create a temporary physical version of that design and place it over your existing teeth. Nothing is drilled and nothing is permanently altered to do this.
You then do what anyone would do. You look in a mirror. You smile properly rather than politely. You talk. You take a photograph on your phone. You see how it sits in your face rather than how it looks on a model.

Why Does Seeing It Matter So Much?
Because describing a smile in words does not work, and I say that after years of trying.
Patients say “natural” and mean quite different things by it. They say “whiter” without a shared reference point for how much whiter. They say “straighter” without knowing whether they want perfectly even edges or something with a bit of character left in it. Two people can use identical language and want visibly different outcomes.
A mockup removes the ambiguity entirely. Instead of trying to describe what you want, you react to something in front of you, which is far easier and far more reliable.
What If I Want Something Changed?
Then we change it, and this is genuinely the purpose of the exercise rather than a concession.
Common requests are exactly what you would expect: slightly less bright, a little shorter, softer edges, less uniform. Those are trivial changes to make to a mockup. They are expensive, slow, and sometimes impossible changes to make once porcelain has been made and fitted.
I would much rather hear “I think that is a bit too much” at this stage than see hesitation on someone’s face at the fit appointment.
Can I Take Time to Decide?
Yes, and I would encourage it. Photograph it. Show your spouse or a friend whose opinion you trust. Sit with it for a few days.
A smile is not a purchase you should feel hurried into, and a decision made under pressure in a dental chair is not a decision anyone should be asked to make about their own face. Nothing about the Test Drive commits you to treatment.
Does It Show Exactly What I Will Get?
It shows the shape, proportion, length, and arrangement of the proposed smile in your face, which is the substance of the design. It is a preview and a communication tool, and a very good one.
What a temporary mockup cannot fully replicate is the optical quality of finished porcelain. Real ceramic has translucency and depth that a temporary material does not, so the finished result typically looks more lifelike than the preview rather than less. I would rather set that expectation honestly than have you assume a one-to-one match.
Does the Test Drive Change the Treatment Plan?
Frequently, yes, and often in the direction of doing less.
Patients sometimes arrive assuming they need extensive work and discover from the mockup that a more conservative plan achieves what they actually wanted. Alignment and whitening alone can resolve more than people expect. Sometimes gum recontouring changes a smile more than adding anything to the teeth.
That matters, because enamel does not grow back. The least invasive plan that delivers the result is nearly always the better one, and seeing the design early is often what reveals that the conservative route is enough.
Who Benefits Most From It?
In my experience, the patients who get most from a Smile Test Drive are the ones who have been thinking about their teeth for years without acting. Usually the obstacle was never money. It was not being able to picture the outcome, and not wanting to gamble on something permanent.
It is also valuable for anyone facing more extensive treatment across several teeth, where the work needs to be planned as a whole.
And it suits people who simply want to be certain before they commit, which in my experience is most of us.
What Happens Afterward?
If you are happy with the design, we map out the treatment needed to achieve it, in what order, and what it will cost. Approved treatment is presented as a case fee that can be broken into phases if that suits you better, with no hidden fees.
If you are not happy, we adjust the design, or you decide not to proceed. Both are perfectly acceptable outcomes.
